He said this during the online forum “Anti-Counterfeiting - Challenges and Smart Solutions”.

The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs stressed that criminals often manage to avoid responsibility for crimes against intellectual property precisely because of imperfection of legislation.

“Anyone who steals money or goods gets a real term. And anyone who steals copyright or counterfeits goods - fines or suspended sentence. That is why I call on people's deputies to increase criminal liability for crimes in the field of intellectual property,” said Anton Gerashchenko.

In addition, the Deputy Minister of the Interior stressed that it is necessary to deepen the level of interaction between law enforcement agencies and the copyright holder in order to more effectively investigate crimes related to counterfeiting activities.

“This topic is especially relevant on World Book and Copyright Day. We will not turn a blind eye to piracy, but we will fight for the rights of every author, by strengthening responsibility,” he said.

It is worth noting that the online forum “Anti-Counterfeiting - Challenges and Smart Solutions” brought together leading experts from international and world organizations that are systematically fighting the gray market and the spread of counterfeit goods on a daily basis.

For reference: The problem of counterfeiting has always existed for Ukraine and the world, and every year it becomes even more relevant, despite the huge efforts made by states and businesses to combat this phenomenon. In August 2020, international research company Euromonitor International predicted that losses to the global economy were projected to be 3%, or $2.2 trillion.
