On June 2, 2016, the 4-th Rapid Response Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine - the so-called "light infantry brigade" - marked the first anniversary of its founding and received its Colours.   The Colours presentation ceremony was attended by the NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov, the Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov and the Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine (NGU) Yuri Allerov.

Addressing the brigade staff, the NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov noted that NGU honorably performs its constitutional duties, protecting the integrity and independence of the country in a war that had been unleashed against Ukraine by the strong and cruel enemy.

According to Arsen Avakov, today the 4-th Rapid Response Brigade is a significant component of the National Guard reform.

"We have here elements of the structural reform and, most importantly, the staff composition reform. The approach, which have been jointly used by the NSDC, MIA and the  NGU command while creating this light infantry brigade, makes it possible to establish a new model of military unit for solving a wide range of tasks"- said Arsen Avakov.

This brigade, founded a year ago, has no analogues in Ukraine.  It includes assault battalions, a tank battalion and an artillery battery.  The brigade also includes the units of unmanned aircraft, intelligence, communications and logistics.

According to the NGU Commander, the light infantry brigade, as well as the NGU as a whole, are now provided with the latest military hardware, weapons, equipment and means of communication.  The principles and standards of NATO are being implemented now in NGU  in the course of staff training as well as provision of hardware. Today NGU is ready to fulfill the military tasks of any complexity on Ukrainian soil:  to repulse the external aggression, neutralize the illegal armed groups and protect the national border.

The 4-th Brigade is a fighting unit, the structure and management of which are built on the model of military units in advanced countries of the world.  Thus, the American model MDMP (Military decision making process) is used for tactical planning.  Brigade officers are currently trained in accordance with this model.

The selection of soldiers to serve in the brigade took place in several stages.  On the first phase the personal data were checked and general testing was conducted.  The second stage - interview with a psychologist and a commander.  The third stage - passing standard tests on physical fitness, endurance, psychological stability in difficult situations, abilities for teamwork, leadership qualities.
