This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs during a speech at a special event of the Ukrainian Women's Congress, which is being held today in Kyiv. The event is devoted to the implementation of NATO standards in the context of women's participation in the security and defense sector.

“NATO promotes gender equality as a reflection of its values. On the way to membership in the Alliance, Ukraine pays considerable attention to gender policy in the security and defense sectors. The Ministry of Internal Affairs identifies Euro-Atlantic integration as a key element of reform, we involve women in tasks in all units and in different areas of the front. We are building a network of gender advisors, working to remove legal barriers and harmonize legislation,” said Kateryna Pavlichenko.

She informed that currently in the units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine the share of women is 30%. These are about 80,000 women throughout the system, of which more than 42,000 are certified, that is, have military or special ranks. Most women work and serve in the National Police.

The deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that women are directly involved in the defense of the country: they deter the enemy, detect enemy DRG, provide assistance to civilians, eliminate the consequences of emergency situations, provide border protection, evacuate the population, record war crimes.

She also informed that women show a desire to join the newly formed brigades of the Guards of the Offensive. “This is a priority project for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and we are proud that there are women among the nine brigades of the offensive guard. At the application stage, we recorded 5% of women, but, due to a fairly tough selection, some of them were eliminated and now the proportion of women in the brigades is 2%,” the deputy minister said.

Kateryna Pavlichenko also spoke about the activities of the Ukrainian Association of Law Enforcement Representatives, which is engaged in building female leadership and increasing the role of women law enforcement officers as agents of change and actors of the peace process in the prevention, regulation and resolution of conflicts. The association promotes the role of Ukrainian women before the global police community.
