Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Oleksiy Sergeyev held a meeting with parliamentarians of United4Ukraine
Today, on the Independence Day of Ukraine, Deputy Head of the Interior Alexei Sergeyev met with delegates from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, Spain, Ireland, Iceland, Canada, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Germany, Finland and the European Parliament members of the world parliamentary network United4Ukraine.
Alexey Sergeev introduced the partners to the current security situation in Ukraine, in particular, told about the constant attacks on the part of the Russian Federation, including on critical infrastructure. The parties also discussed the situation on the front, the mineability of territories and the priorities of the country on the way to joining the EU and NATO.
At the beginning of the event, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs thanked the parliamentarians of United4Ukraine for all the assistance provided by their countries against the background of a full-scale Russian invasion.
“I am pleased to welcome the honourable delegation to Kyiv today, when Ukraine celebrates the 32nd anniversary of the declaration of independence. Your presence here is especially valuable as evidence of support and solidarity in times when we are forced to fight for our right to life. For 18 months, the Ukrainian state continues to resist the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation. In particular, the units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are an integral part of the security and defense sector and constitute the fourth part of the combined defense forces,” Alexei Sergeev said in the hall of the Verkhovna Rada.
The Deputy Minister stressed that world support is very important for Ukraine, because the enemy daily terrorizes the civilian population of Ukraine by striking residential buildings and critical infrastructure. In addition, the Russian occupiers are deliberately attacking Ukrainian seaports. Alexey Sergeev stressed that these actions grossly violate the UN Charter, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and other norms of international law. Russia is deliberately threatening food security and trying to put pressure on the international community.
“These facts are an objective explanation for our call to international partners — the Ukrainian military must have enough long-range weapons to prevent such terrorist attacks from Russia. There should be no artificial limitation of military-technical assistance to Ukraine. The speed of delivery of weapons remains critical,” Alexei Sergeyev said.
The parties also discussed the situation with the minesweeping of Ukraine. The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs noted that the advancement of Ukraine is seriously hampered by intensive mining. In addition, one of the challenges is humanitarian demining, as this is one of the prerequisites for the restoration of livelihoods in the de-occupied territories:
“Despite the fact that during 2023-2024, the forces and means of demining the Ministry of Internal Affairs will be doubled, it will take years to fully demine the territories. Therefore, the introduction of advanced mining technologies into the activities of the units and equipping them with modern samples of machinery and equipment are our priorities.”
In addition, Alexey Sergeev informed the parliamentarians of United4Ukraine about the priorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in view of the war. In particular, he told the partners that despite the hostilities, the criminogenic situation remains important for Ukraine. Thus, in order to control the circulation of weapons in Ukraine, the Unified Register was launched.
“Together with the EU, we have already started implementing joint measures to combat weapons leakage, including within the framework of the operational plan of the multidisciplinary EMPACT platform. It is important for us to take all necessary measures to prevent the use of weapons by illegal elements,” said Alexey Sergeyev.
Also an important course for Ukraine is European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs reported to the partners that the Ministry of Internal Affairs, together with the Office of the Prosecutor General, is actively working on the reform of law and order bodies, which is one of the conditions for joining the EU.
“Currently, the Ministry is taking measures to conduct the Public Security and Civil Protection Review, which is a necessary step for further preparation of the Strategy of Public Security and Civil Protection of Ukraine, which should become the main strategic document that will determine security threats and priorities for the coming years,” Oleksiy Sergeev summed up.
In turn, the parliamentarians of United4Ukraine thanked the Ministry of Internal Affairs for its fruitful work despite constant attacks from Russia and assured of further support for our country.
