About 7,000 of them are military personnel. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, the number of missing has quadrupled. Police have stepped up their efforts to search for them. The Deputy Head of the National Police — Chief of the Criminal Police Andrey Nevitov, told about the progress of the detective work in a comment to the TV channel “Social”.

He noted that as of February 24, 2022, 12,292 people were considered missing. Today, 50,150 people remain unsought.

“Every missing person or unidentified person is not just a statistical unit, it is grief, pain and suffering of relatives. The war changed the scope of detective work. Collection of information, verification of data, implementation of search activities are complicated by the unpredictable situation on the front line, massive attacks on peaceful cities, migration of people and temporary occupation of territories,” Andriy Nevitov noted.

Despite this, in two years, the police managed to establish the fate of 14,409 people who disappeared. Among them, 4,529 people are identified as dead.

The police are involved in the identification of bodies that Ukraine manages to return from the occupied territory. Each repatriated body is examined by experts, biological samples are selected for genetic analysis. Police officers open criminal proceedings on each fact and take measures to identify the deceased and establish his relatives.

“The burden on law enforcement officers has increased, but the operatives are working to the maximum and continue to fight for every human fate. Therefore, the prospects for the development of detective work are so important for us: new algorithms of action, international partnership, updated legislation and the involvement of modern technologies,” added the Deputy Head of the National Police.
