“We will fight until our Victory” — the story of the guard Alexei
The 45-year-old volunteer comes from the picturesque Cherkasy region, where since childhood, despite Soviet propaganda, he was interested in the life of his ancestors and the history of the liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people for their independence.
In 2015, Oleksiy volunteered at the Military Admissions Office and was sent to one of the military units of the National Guard of Ukraine in the city of Vinnytsia. Having a military service as a driver in the airmobile forces, he became a driver of a medical car. Immediately after the preparation, business trips to the ATO zone in eastern Ukraine began. As part of the medical brigade, he visited all, at that time, places where hostilities took place.
“My main task was to quickly and safely bring the wounded to a medical facility. The situations were different. They came under fire and off-road, but the task was fulfilled, because the life of the brothers was the most valuable,” Oleksiy recalls.
Demobilized at the end of 2016 from the service, he went on to work as a driver and raise two children with his wife: son David and daughter Alexander.
“After returning from the service, I greatly overestimated my attitude to life. Home and family came first for me. When my son turned 20 and the question of service arose, my answer was unequivocal. Every Ukrainian should be able to protect his family and country,” says Oleksiy.
Son David listened to his father's word and after graduating from vocational college signed a contract and served as a driver in one of the military units of the National Guard in the Kiev region.
“February 24 started for me with a phone call from my brother and I realized that this is war. Without hesitation, having collected the necessary documents and things, saying goodbye to his wife and daughter, after a few hours he was at the checkpoint of the part where his son serves,” says Alexey.
Since then, father and son have been defending the Motherland together and carrying out tasks as assigned. The driver's craft is not easy, but it is necessary for the troops. During the defense of Kiev, they provided the units with ammunition, food and everything necessary.
“The enemy has come to destroy Ukrainians as a people and to destroy our country. We will fight until our Victory — until the last leg of the occupier leaves our land,” the guard concluded.
