From now on, Ukraine and Italy exchange national driver's licenses according to simplified procedure
Today, January 24, the Agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Italian Republic on mutual recognition and exchange of national driver's licenses came into force. The document was signed on July 20, 2021 in Rome and will be valid for 5 years.
The new Agreement is concluded in connection with the expiration of the previous one concluded in 2015 for a period of 5 years. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport of Italy worked on the coordination of the document.
From now on, every citizen of Ukraine who moves to live in Italy will be able to convert his own national driver's license to an Italian equivalent according to a simplified procedure. No need to re-pass theoretical and practical exams. And this, first of all, will reduce bureaucratic red tape and save money for many of our compatriots.
During the period of validity of the previous Agreement, more than 22 thousand requests for the exchange of national ID cards by citizens of Ukraine in Italy were received and processed.
This proves once again that the issue is extremely relevant for Ukrainians who legally live and work in Italy. The exchange procedure takes some time, because a special check is carried out to find out the validity of the documents. When issuing a new Italian driver's license, the Ukrainian one is withdrawn. Accordingly, Italians will submit their national document upon receipt of the Ukrainian one.
The Agreement applies to citizens of Ukraine who:
— legally reside in Italy; — are residents of Italy for less than four years;
— have a valid Ukrainian driver's license.
