On May 1, 13 vehicles were handed over to mobile police groups to combat gender-based violence in Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
“The topic of violence prevention for the National Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs is a priority. Today, due to a full-scale war, tensions in society are increasing, and because of this, the percentage of cases of domestic violence is increasing. Compared to past periods, the rate of domestic violence cases is expected to rise to 30%. Therefore, we are training specialists, and thanks to the French government and the UN, we can provide cars with mobile police groups in Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions,” said Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Kateryna Pavlichenko.
13 vehicles for mobile police response teams to respond to domestic violence were delivered with the support of UNFPA, the UN Population Fund in Ukraine, with the support of the French Government as part of the International Technical Assistance Project “Supporting the Police to Create an Effective Response Model to Domestic Violence and Gender-Based Violence “War and Transition.”
The head of the National Police of Ukraine Ivan Vyhivskyi noted that currently about 600 police officers are involved in mobile groups that deal with counteracting and preventing violence.
“The cars that we receive today with the support of the French government and in cooperation with the UN are equipped with everything necessary for police officers, in particular, body cameras, power banks and means for functioning without electricity, because the vehicles will be sent to the frontline and border areas,” said Ivan Viv, the head of the National Police Ghivsky.
Each car is equipped with a portable solar charging station and portable chargers, flashlights, thermal blanket, body cameras and other equipment necessary for the operation of specialized units to combat domestic violence.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to Ukraine Gael Vessier also stressed that the support of the police is the support of the whole of Ukraine. He noted that the main component of stressful situations that lead to violence is Russian aggression against Ukraine:
“Diplomacy is not only about words, it is also about the help that we are happy to provide to Ukraine, in particular to those affected by violence. We are ready and will continue to help the Ukrainian people.”
The representative of the UN Population Fund in Ukraine Massimo Diana noted that the 2-year cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and the National Police contributes to the effective support of victims of domestic or gender-based violence.
“UNFPA's collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the National Police has shown that preventing and countering gender-based violence is significantly more effective when working on the ground is combined with a wider network of services and services at the municipal level. The aim of this initiative is to increase the capacity of the Ukrainian authorities to work more closely with communities, including in rural areas. Therefore, it is critically important to increase mobility opportunities for the provision of vital services,” said Massimo Diana, UN Population Fund Representative in Ukraine.
Massimo Diana solemnly handed over the certificate of receipt of 13 vehicles to Ivan Vyhivsky. Also, all those present had the opportunity to inspect the cars that will soon go to Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
