Ukraine celebrates Europe Day for the first time — May 9
This year, Ukraine celebrates Europe Day together with the countries of the European Union — on May 9, in the status of a candidate country for EU membership.
The corresponding decree on the establishment in Ukraine on May 9 as Europe Day was signed by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
After World War II, our continent managed to unite many different peoples in peace and cooperation. May 9 in the European Union is approved as Europe Day, one of the official symbols of the EU.
And it is obvious that we are part of a family of European states with common values and aspirations, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine firmly stand in defense of the whole Free Europe.
Ukraine, like no one, knows the price of the unity of democratic countries, whose support allowed us to stop the Russian aggressor. The European Union is more united than ever in solidarity and support of Ukraine in all dimensions from the first days of the invasion.
Celebrating Europe Day on May 9 (together with other European countries), we underline our unity and strength, our faith in the European integration project as a driver of development and peace on the continent. Here in Ukraine, we are writing a new chapter in the history of Free Europe.
For the second year in a row, Ukraine has been defending on the battlefield its independence from the “Russian measure”, its distinctive identity and its European free future.
It is also worth noting that President Volodymyr Zelensky introduced to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine a bill establishing May 8 as the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II 1939-1945.
After all, there is an inextricable link between Remembrance Day and the victory over Nazism in World War II and Europe Day — and especially for us now. We fought in World War II against evil together with the peoples of the Anti-Hitler Coalition, together with the free world.
And today we are fighting against racism. We defend ourselves now together with a free Europe — our ally, and our unity with it — is approaching our day of victory, our first day of peace.
