Agreement on cooperation between law enforcement officers of Ukraine and Turkey needs to be improved
At the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on February 2, the issue of settlement and expansion of cooperation between the two countries in the law enforcement sphere was considered.
Cooperation between law enforcement agencies of Ukraine and Turkey is carried out within the framework of an agreement between the Governments of our countries, signed in 2009, and currently needs to be finalized.
Since the signing of the Agreement, there have been numerous changes in the legislation of Ukraine and the reform of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies. In particular, the National Police, the State Bureau of Investigation, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau were created. Currently, the areas of cooperation defined by the Agreement fall within the competence of these bodies. Therefore, there is a need to clarify the list of competent authorities responsible for the implementation of the Agreement, and to specify the areas and forms of cooperation of the parties.
It is about expanding cooperation in the areas of illicit drug trafficking, combating criminal offenses related to chemical, biological, radiological/radioactive and nuclear materials, and conducting appropriate training of personnel. In addition, the provisions concerning the protection of personal data need to be detailed.
Such changes will contribute to the proper fulfillment by Ukraine of the obligations undertaken under the Agreement and will expand the spheres of interaction between Ukrainian and Turkish law enforcement agencies.
