The police explained how not to become a victim of telephone scams
“Your relative is in trouble” is the most popular scam scheme. The scam is very simple, but decisive here are the element of surprise and the play on the emotions of the victim.
As a rule, in a telephone conversation, strangers are represented by law enforcement officers, doctors or even relatives of those they call. Attackers emotionally report an “accident”, “urgent operation”, “commission of a crime” or other problems of relatives, which can only be solved financially.
If a person is nervous and supports the conversation, the attacker is satisfied - the victim “on the hook”. Scammers are good psychologists, they do not allow the victim to get out of a stressful situation, conduct a dialogue so that the victims agree to help a relative and obediently follow the advice of a “good” mediator.
The most important thing scammers say is not to hang up. Thus, they do not make it possible to call relatives, and check whether the information they report is valid.
For money come accomplices of scammers, so-called “couriers”, who later transfer funds to the accounts of the organizers.
What if you received such a call?
— do not maintain a dialogue, put the handset;
— check where your relative is;
— be sure to report the incident to the police by number “102".
