Human trafficking is a common challenge for all law enforcement agencies — Denis Monastyrsky
This was reiterated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine during an online meeting with representatives of the US Office for Monitoring and Countering Trafficking in Persons.
Denis Monastyrsky told foreign partners about the implementation of a number of initiatives to prevent and prevent human trafficking in Ukraine by units of the National Police.
“Human trafficking is a common challenge for all law enforcement agencies of our country. Transnational criminal networks do not ignore this type of criminal business, which in terms of profitability is second only to arms or drug trafficking,” the minister said.
He also said that the Ministry of Internal Affairs, together with parliamentarians, has prepared a draft law, which provides:
- making it impossible for traffickers to obtain conditional imprisonment in order to make their punishment adequate for the crime committed by them; - failure to take into account the consent of the victim of trafficking to planned exploitation during the qualification of traffickers' actions;
- Strengthening the punishment for trafficking in human beings in the composition of the criminal group.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported on the positive dynamics of criminal prosecution of traffickers. In the past year 2021, police discovered 10% more cases of human trafficking. 15% more traffickers are prosecuted.
In turn, Acting Director of the Office of Monitoring and Countering Trafficking in Persons of the United States Carrie Johnston thanked the representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the attention they are paying to the issue of combating trafficking in human beings.
“At a time when your country is faced with migration threats from Belarus and security threats from Russia, you do not ignore the issue of combating human trafficking. It is very valuable. Thank you,” said Carrie Johnston.
