For almost a month, inspectors of the Explosive Service Department of the Special Purpose Police Battalion of Lviv Oblast Police have been clearing eastern Ukraine of dangerous objects — anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, aircraft bombs, as well as munitions that remained intact in the ground.

After the liberation of the territories from the enemy, hundreds of square kilometers of Kharkiv region remain studded with deadly “metal”.

Today there is a consolidated detachment of specialists of the explosives service and special police officers of various regions. Including three employees of the special purpose police battalion of Lviv region police — Chief of the Explosive Service Department Maxim Lubin, Senior Inspector Roman Vasylkevych and Inspector Ostap Budnik.

On a daily basis, police officers go on missions where they detect and defuse dozens of explosive objects — so-called “petals” (anti-tank mines), anti-tank mines, survey forests and farmland, as well as abandoned settlements that may be mined or in which unexploded shells may remain. After all, it was here that fierce battles were fought.

“Many villages are destroyed, there are no roads or buildings, and those that survived are still abandoned by the inhabitants. We do not know when people will return here, but whenever that happens, our task is to make the settlements completely safe. Every street, house, hospital, school should be freed from explosive objects, and so that people can go out to gardens or fields without fear and work on the land,” says Maxim Lubin.

The guys work in Izyum, Kupyansk and Kharkiv districts. At first, practical skills in operational demining were practiced under the supervision of specialists, explosives technicians of the National Police, mastered various methods of sapper work, and now they perform tasks independently.

“Every day we defuse 12-15 anti-personnel mines, a large number of anti-tank mines, we detect unexploded munitions. In addition, we examine the rehabilitation center for animals, located nearby, - we check whether there are any explosive objects left, so that it can resume its activities soon,” the guys say.

Today, hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of Ukrainian territory are contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance. And, unfortunately, the consequences of the Russian invasion will remind of themselves for a long time to come. However, the police do not give up. And the greatest reward for them is to see people return to liberated lands.

It should be noted that during the past day the pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service were involved 128 times, 272 explosive objects were detected, seized and neutralized, and an area of 31.50 hectares was surveyed.
