Fraudulent business behind bars: the scammer offered “international assistance” and appropriated about 140 thousand hryvnias
Law enforcement officers of the Zhytomyr region have exposed a man who cheated out of citizens about 140 thousand hryvnias. The scammer called the victims and reported the possibility of receiving “financial assistance” from international organizations.
Sometimes he was called a bank worker, sometimes a representative of a charitable organization. The scammer convinced the victims that in order to enroll social benefits, it is necessary to give him the confidential card details, as well as the password that will be sent by the message. He even persuaded several people to transfer personal funds to the card indicated by him, insisting that these are the conditions for receiving benefits. Thus, 12 people from different regions of the country between 28 and 71 years old believed in the veracity of his calls. The largest amount of the transaction of destruction of the wallet of one of the victims is more than 34 thousand hryvnias.
The man spent the received funds on online entertainment, gaming sites, payment for goods and services, or made transfers to other bank accounts.
At the beginning of July, in the cell of the correctional institution, where he has been serving his sentence since 2022, the police searched and seized SIM cards, scratch cards, notebooks with records, mobile phones.
Recently, the indictment in criminal proceedings was sent to court. A man is criminalized for the possession of someone else's property by deception (fraud), committed repeatedly, through illegal transactions using electronic computer technology (part 3 of Art. 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), as well as the disposal of property in respect of which the actual circumstances indicate its receipt by criminal means, including the implementation of a financial transaction (Part 2 of Art. 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
