Police reported on suspicion of the head of the enterprise in the illegal storage and use of radioactive materials

Without the legal permits, the company imported into the territory of Ukraine and illegally stored the source of ionizing radiation in the form of a capsule. In the future, attackers systematically provided services using this radioactive material. Currently, it has been established that the total cost of the services provided is more than 20 million hryvnias.

Employees of the Department of Ensuring Activities Related to Hazardous Materials, together with the investigators of the Main Investigative Department of the National Police of Ukraine, established that in September 2018 in Kyiv, the management of one of the enterprises providing services for industrial and geophysical research imported and stored in the territory of Ukraine a source of ionizing radiation in the form of a trap sols with a neutron source. At the same time, the attackers did not have the legal permits for handling the specified radioactive materials.

It is worth noting that, according to the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring Sanitary and Epidemic Welfare of the Population”, work with radioactive substances and other sources of ionizing radiation is carried out with the permission of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service and other state bodies.

At the same time, in accordance with the basic sanitary rules of ensuring radiation safety of Ukraine, the source of ionizing radiation cannot be the subject of purchase, import, export, sale, rental, possession, use, receipt, transmission, placement on a land plot, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance transportation, storage or disposal, if this does not comply with the requirements of sanitary legislation.

However, as established by the police, during 2018-2021, the company systematically, without permits stipulated by law, used this radioactive material in the provision of services for conducting industrial and geophysical research of wells in the territory of Kharkiv, Poltava, Kiev and other regions. The total cost of the services provided is more than 20 million hryvnias.

On January 19, the investigators of the Main Investigative Department of the National Police under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General reported on the suspicion of the head of the enterprise in committing criminal offenses provided for in Part 1, 3 of Art. 265 (Illegal handling of radioactive materials) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He faces criminal liability in the form of imprisonment for a term of 8 to 15 years.

Currently, law enforcement officers are identifying other persons involved in the specified offense. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
