Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Kateryna Pavlichenko held a meeting with the newly appointed leadership of the CPMU (Canadian Police Mission in Ukraine) and PSP (Police Stabilization Project). Among the issues to be discussed is strengthening the capabilities of the National Police with the involvement of Canadian specialists.

The Deputy Minister thanked the partners for their cooperation, which has been going on for more than 8 years. During the meeting, she outlined priority areas of training, including the work of NPU units in de-occupied territories and with communities, combating domestic violence and psychological support for law enforcement officers. Also, the Ukrainian side stressed the need for changes, because during the full-scale invasion, the work of Ukrainian policemen changed greatly.

“This is the evacuation of civilians, investigation of war crimes, exhumation, etc. Previously, our law enforcement officers did not face such challenges. Now they have a double load. First, they work in extreme conditions. Secondly, there are their families, who in some cases are victims of war. The work of the National Police has changed a lot, so support from international partners, including Canada, is now more relevant than ever,” said Kateryna Pavlichenko.

In turn, Director of the Police Stabilization Project, Tom Monastyrski, assured of the support of the National Police from Canada. He also stressed that PSP remains as flexible as possible to respond to the request of Ukrainian partners.

The head of the Canadian Police Mission to Ukraine noted that the training programs of Ukrainian law enforcement officers will be adapted to the challenges faced by police officers during the war.

“Currently, representatives of CPMU are working on the preparation of trainings and courses for law enforcement officers. In particular, one of the priorities of our cooperation is the launch of a course of tactical medicine. To do this, we will involve our medical instructors,” said Blair Schmidt.

She has also expressed her interest in working towards psychological support and mental health.

The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs thanked the representatives of the mission for the visit and expressed hope for further cooperation.
