Today, July 6, First Lady Elena Zelenska together with Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Ekaterina Pavlichenko visited one of five driving schools launched within the framework of the “Driving Schools for Persons with Disabilities” project on the basis of departmental educational institutions.

Driving schools for people with disabilities” is the flagship project of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which is implemented within the framework of the initiative “Without barriers”. The aim of the project is to create an effective and comfortable system of adaptation of persons with disabilities to driving vehicles, taking into account their capabilities and needs.

“Unfortunately, every day in Ukraine the number of people with disabilities among civilians and military is increasing. By presenting the project, we also want to reach those people who have acquired a disability before the war and have long been intending to become drivers. We aim within the state to create an effective system of adaptation of persons with disabilities to driving vehicles, which involves not only training, but also retraining,” said Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Kateryna Pavlichenko.

Ekaterina Pavlichenko told Elena Zelenska about the first results of the launch of the project.

“People with disabilities who want to obtain a license for the right to drive a category B vehicle for the first time, or those who need retraining, are invited to study. Currently, 22 students are undergoing theoretical and practical training in adapted driving schools as part of the test set, 1 of them has already received a driver's license.”

It should be noted that the first five driving schools of the project were opened on the basis of educational institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kyiv, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Kropyvnytskyi, Lviv and Dnipro.

“This is the barrier-free action that I always promote and which our country has committed to implement even before the Russian invasion — equal opportunities, comfort and convenience for all Ukrainians, in all spheres. It is difficult to overestimate this project now — when, due to Russian attacks on people with disabilities, we are rapidly growing every day — young, active, full of plans. But they will certainly realize everything conceived and implemented in Ukraine fully — confidently managing not only the car, but also their own future,” said Elena Zelenska.

The first lady talked with future drivers, and now students of the driving school. They told Elena Zelenskaya about their own impressions regarding the quality of services.

“I am taking a practical exam today. I am very grateful for this opportunity and the initiative of the authorities for people with disabilities. Here everything is very well equipped, there is unhindered access to the dining room, dormitory, there are ramps everywhere. Everything is at the highest level,” admits one of the students of Alyona.

A woman since childhood moves in a wheelchair. Having learned about the opportunity to study at a driving school, she immediately decided to take a course and pass the law. Since she came from another city, Alyona lived in one of the dormitory rooms on the basis of a driving school, completely converted according to the needs of people with disabilities.
