The national guard won gold for Ukraine at the European Championship
This is the first gold in 10 years at the Euro in free competition. In the final, the Ukrainian defeated the current European champion.
Until Euro 2023, Senior Sergeant Mikhailov had only one medal of continental firsts. In 2020, the Ukrainian wrestler won “bronze” in weight up to 79 kg. And the previous European Championship, the 27-year-old athlete was forced to miss due to a full-scale invasion - the Ukrainian freestyle wrestling association included only the women's team in the application.
By the way, according to the results of the first day of the European Championship, Ukraine went to four medal matches, one of which turned out to be gold. Vasily Mikhailov in weight up to 79 kg for the first time in his career went to the fight for “gold”.
Recall that the last time Ukraine won the gold medal in men's freestyle wrestling in 2013. Then the wrestler Pavel Oliynyk became the champion in the weight category up to 96 kg.
