In Sumy region, the family of the fallen soldier-border guard was awarded the medal “Defender of the Fatherland”
The state award was presented to the wife and daughter of the deceased border guard Yuri Shkumat.
Yuri was born on September 25, 1987 in the village Dubovyazivka, Konotop district, Sumy region. In 2009 he graduated from Sumy State University.
In 2014, Yuriy Shkumat joined the ranks of the State Border Service of Ukraine, was trained at the Main Personnel Training Center of the State Border Guard Service named after Major General Igor Momot. Upon completion of his training, Yuriy Shkumat served in various units of the Sumy Detachment, and since 2021 — in the Luhansk Border Detachment. For all the time of his service, Yuri Shkumat proved himself as a courageous and courageous soldier.
On November 1, 2022, Yuriy Shkumat as part of the engineering group performed combat missions on one of the sections of the state border of Sumy region. As a result of artillery shelling, the border guard received a shrapnel wound incompatible with life.
For his personal courage and selfless actions in defense of state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, loyalty to the military oath, by the Decree of the President of Ukraine, Sergeant Major Yuriy Shkumat was awarded the Medal “Defender of the Fatherland” posthumously.
