In Odesa region, police officers exposed a foreigner in an attempt to get rich at the expense of money withdrawn from circulation
The offender was detained while trying to transfer the banknotes withdrawn from circulation to the card through the payment terminal. During the search of his place of residence and work, the police seized almost a million hryvnias, which employees of Ukrainian banking institutions deliberately damaged in the temporarily occupied territories of our state in order to transfer them to a state of non-payment.
Operators of the Criminal Investigation Department received information that in the city of Chernomorsk, an unknown person loads payment terminals with banknotes of national currency, which have ceased to be a means of payment.
During the implementation of this information, the police identified the person involved in this transaction. This is a 50-year-old foreigner who has been living in the Odessa region for many years. The man was detained while trying to transfer 7000 thousand hryvnias withdrawn from circulation through the payment terminal to the card.
At the place of residence and work of the foreigner, law enforcement officers conducted an urgent search, during which they found and seized 950 thousand damaged hryvnias in denominations of 100 and 200 UAH, as well as 10 thousand US dollars and 750 thousand Russian rubles.
At the moment, the man was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine and placed in a temporary detention center. Investigators informed the defendant about the suspicion of an unfinished attempt at fraud committed through illegal operations using electronic computing. This crime is provided for in Part 3 of Art. 15, Part 3 of Art. 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and is punishable by imprisonment for a term of three to eight years.
The events are carried out by investigators of the police department No. 1 of the Odessa district police department No. 2 under the procedural leadership of the Black Sea District Prosecutor's Office and under the operational support of the Criminal Investigation Department of the GUNP in the Odessa region.
During the investigation, the police will establish the circle of persons involved in the crime, the origin of the money and the exact amount of funds that the defendant managed to put into circulation through the terminals.
Citizens should be reminded that when withdrawing money from terminals, or during payments, be vigilant and pay attention to the integrity of bills. In case of receipt of mechanically damaged banknotes (cutting off at least half of the banknote; cutting in half or into three parts; drilling three or more holes in the banknote) or special solutions or other coloring substances with a paint coating of at least 50% of the total area of the banknote — contact the nearest bank branch and the police.
