The Ministry of Internal Affairs and GLOBSEC discussed the issue of demining of Ukraine
On April 27, Deputy Interior Minister Kateryna Pavlichenko and Bohdan Drapyaty discussed with the international delegation GLOBSEC the issue of overcoming the security challenges that our country had to face. The main topic of the meeting was the intensification of efforts to demine Ukrainian territories.
Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Ekaterina Pavlichenko told the GLOBSEC delegation members about the role of the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, the National Police and the State Emergency Service, which fight back against the enemy at the front and carry out demining of Ukrainian territories. She also outlined the challenges faced by the units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs when entering the de-occupied regions.
“Today, our units perform somewhat different functions than before the armed invasion of Russia. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the National Police of Ukraine has recorded more than 44 thousand shelling from the Russian side. The State Emergency Service recorded the destruction and damage by the occupiers of more than 179 thousand objects. Among them, 157 thousand are residential buildings, and more than three thousand are educational institutions. Also, more than a thousand health institutions were damaged,” said Kateryna Pavlichenko.
In turn, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Bohdan Drapyaty told the partners about the minesweeping of the territory of Ukraine, the dynamics of demining and the importance of international support to improve the quality and speed up this process.
“One of the methods of this war used by the terrorist state Russia is to invade the territories of our state. According to preliminary data, 174 thousand square kilometers are potentially mined in Ukraine. This is approximately 30% of the territory of our country,” Bohdan Drapyaty said.
He also stressed that the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the National Police and the National Guard are involved in the demining process, primarily in the de-occupied territories. However, for greater efficiency, Ukraine needs the help of foreign partners.
“We call on international organizations to help us in this process. Currently, 10 mine operators are engaged in mining operations in Ukraine, four of them are foreign non-governmental organizations. In order for the demining process to be efficient and faster, we need even more technical support,” Bohdan Drapyaty said, addressing the delegation.
President of the international organization GLOBSEC Robert Vash announced the readiness of the organization and partners to support Ukraine in this matter:
“We are impressed with your resilience. In such terrible times, you demonstrate that you can work, even in conditions of war. We understand perfectly well that there is no question of a stable peace until criminals are punished. We also understand the challenges and challenges facing your country. One agency cannot solve all these issues alone. That's why we're reaching out to the international community to help you.”
At the end of the meeting, the members of the delegation agreed to coordinate their efforts on issues of support for Ukraine against the background of Russia's armed aggression.
