On July 29, during a working meeting on combating domestic violence in Ukraine, representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, NPU, human rights, international and public organizations agreed on steps to combat cases of domestic violence. The meeting was held on the initiative of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Denis Monastyrsky.

“Today we continue to actively work on a problem that may manifest itself in a few months - domestic violence. I am very concerned that there is a trend in society when people think that the problems of domestic violence are out of time against the background of the war, that their solution should be postponed somewhere later. At the same time, we are well aware that soon the problem of domestic violence can become much worse. Therefore, we have to work ahead today,” said Denis Monastyrsky.

In turn, Deputy Minister Kateryna Pavlichenko stressed that world practice shows that military conflicts do not pass without a trace and war can negatively affect families in particular.

“Ukrainian society does not cultivate violence. At the same time, we understand that the war will make its adjustments to the psycho-emotional state of Ukrainians, the consequence of this is predicted to be a significant increase in cases of domestic violence,” said Kateryna Pavlichenko.

Representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Police, public and human rights organizations agreed that it is necessary to improve cooperation mechanisms to combat domestic violence.

According to Olesya Kompaniets, Head of the Programme on Gender-Based Violence of the United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine, unfortunately, there is a tendency to normalize violence in society today, and this is an alarming signal. People begin to believe that against the background of what is happening in the country, domestic violence is not important and normalizes it. She predicts that this trend will be observed for a long time, perhaps even after the end of the war.

During the meeting, the parties agreed that work should be stepped up now and agreed on joint steps.

Among them:

- review of the current mechanisms of police work;

- Strengthening preventive measures against offenders;

- improvement of legislation.

In addition, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs stressed that it is necessary to conduct information campaigns so that those affected understand where to go and what to do, to know their algorithm of actions when contacting law enforcement officers.
