“My doors have opened on the front near Zaporizhzhia”: the story of an NGU officer about training abroad and his own combat path
Vasily Perun went to the rank of officer purposefully and confidently. After graduating from the military college, he held the position of platoon commander, and later as deputy company commander.
One of the exercises with the unit took place in the UK. He says that our military has something to learn from foreign colleagues, but Ukrainians show their experience and professionalism abroad.
The first battles Vasily met with his unit in the Zaporizhzhya region near the village of Verbove. He says that it was difficult, the enemy constantly carried out reconnaissance with the help of drones, and the artillery did not calm down at all, says the officer.
“Movies often show how the doors of transport open, and a soldier sees war for the first time. My doors opened on the front near Zaporozhye. We had an armored car, Kirpi. On it, we drove to the place of transfer to lighter cars, and they already went directly to the positions. This was done because the armored vehicles did not have the speed and maneuverability to take the position without losses. The guys who came into the front positions suffered losses, so we had to come in and help them. We were met by dense artillery fire, a 120-caliber mortar was working on us, the tank was working, SPG and GRAD. I felt for myself what an air bomb was. FAB 500. An enemy plane flew, launched two FABs. They aimed at the command post, but they missed,” says Vasily.
Against the National Guards, the enemy used professional units of paratroopers. Under the cover of barrel and jet artillery, they drive into positions and try to destroy our fortifications with the help of heavy equipment.
“Artillery, drones and aviation play a very important role in this war. Our pilots also deal a lot of blows to the enemy. I once saw how our helicopter flew and worked on the enemy NURSI. Now we really need automotive equipment so that it is safer to carry out rotations in positions and evacuate our wounded. Very necessary means of electronic warfare, drones, shells for artillery. If we have more drones and more shells, the infantry will be much easier,” the officer of the NGU shares his thoughts.
