Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klimenko met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Great Britain to Ukraine Melinda Simmons
Today, May 3, the Ministry of the Interior held a working meeting of the head of the department and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Ukraine Melinda Simmons.
“It was Great Britain in the early days of the war that trained our investigators to document war crimes,” said Igor Klymenko, thanking at the beginning of the conversation for all the help that the UK provided and continues to provide.
Currently, Ukrainian specialists not only effectively use the acquired knowledge, but also share it with foreign colleagues.
Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Klymenko said that the National Police has the largest base of war crimes of the Russian Federation collected in the Kiev region, in particular in Bucha, Irpen and Gostomel: “We have answers photos and videos that confirm the presence of Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine and their commission of crimes, in particular the shelling of civilian cars and buildings,” said the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons expressed her condolences and pain for the innocent Ukrainian lives killed.
Also, Minister Igor Klymenko noted that the base has relevant videos, where you can clearly observe how the commanders of the Russian army order soldiers to shoot civilian cars that tried to leave the occupied territories. It is now known that 35% of the victims had gunshot wounds, 15% were shrapnel wounds and about 7-8% were persons burned in the bombardment by the occupiers.
After the de-occupation of Kiev region in April 2022, the National Police of Ukraine documented these crimes, which were discovered after the departure of Russian troops. It is the large number of trained investigators and forensics that has made it possible to document war crimes effectively. To date, about 74,500 of these have been documented and registered by the police.
They also discussed one of the most important issues - the demining of the territory of Ukraine.
“Currently, pyrotechnics and explosives from the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, mainly carry out operational demining. During the stabilization measures in the de-occupied territories, the priority is always important communications, in particular gas pipelines and electricity supply, as well as administrative buildings,” Ihor Klymenko noted.
British Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine Melinda Simmons stressed that the British Government will continue to contribute to Ukraine's assistance, recovery and security.
