Cyberpolice exposed the attackers who took a million hryvnias from the accounts of Ukrainians
The two men in telephone conversations assured citizens that their accounts had been accessed by outsiders. “For protection” they asked to name all bank data, and having received them, they appropriated the money of the victims. The total amount of losses is about one million hryvnias.
The fraudulent scheme was exposed by employees of the department of combating cybercrime in the Poltava region together with the investigative department of the regional police of the region and in cooperation with employees of the bank's security service.
The illegal scheme was turned around by two friends: they called citizens, posing as representatives of the bank, and convinced that fraudsters had gained access to their accounts. In order to save money and block suspicious transactions, attackers question the number, CVV code, card PIN and validity period.
The defendants tied this information to payment systems and, using NFC technology, withdrew cash at ATMs. To do this, they also asked the victims for a confirmation code.
According to preliminary estimates, the attackers searched about 60 citizens, mostly older. The total amount of losses reaches one million hryvnias.
Police officers conducted searches in the homes of the defendants. Removed mobile phones, more than 30 bank cards, SIM cards and flash drives. Employees of a special purpose police battalion were also involved in the investigative actions.
The attackers were declared a suspect under Part 3 of Art. 190 (Fraud) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for up to eight years in prison. Investigative actions continue. Suspects have chosen a precautionary measure in the form of detention.
Procedural leadership is carried out by prosecutors of the Poltava Regional Prosecutor's Office.
We remind you: do not tell anyone your bank card details, especially CVV and PIN code, because real bank employees never ask for such information.
