Cyberpolice exposed Dnieper resident in appropriation of more than 2.5 million UAH of military personnel
The attacker gained access to the online banking of servicemen who are currently considered missing or in captivity. The defendant “withdrew” the money of the defenders to the controlled accounts. He has now been declared a suspect.
The fraudulent scheme was exposed by employees of the Cyber Police Department together with the investigators of the Pechersk Police Department of Kyiv and representatives of the security services of PrivatBank and Sportbank.
A 32-year-old resident of Dnipro reissued SIM cards belonging to soldiers who were in captivity, died or disappeared without a hitch. Having gained access to financial numbers, the attacker accessed online banking accounts and appropriated money to controlled accounts.
According to operational data, the amount of losses is more than 2.5 million hryvnias. It was established that the attacker compromised about two dozen financial numbers of the military. At the place of residence of the accused, law enforcement officers conducted a search. Bank cards, mobile phones and laptops have been removed.
The special unit “TOR” of the patrol police of the Dnipropetrovsk region was also involved in the searches. The man was declared a suspect under Part 3 of Art. 190 (Fraud) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The suspect has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention with the right to make bail. Investigative actions continue.
