Cyberpolice exposed attacker in illegal currency exchange of occupiers
The man made a cashless exchange of hryvnias for rubles and rubles for hryvnias. He advertised his services in the messenger and managed to carry out transactions for more than 5 million hryvnias.
The illegal activity was exposed by the employees of the Department of Counter Cybercrime in the Odessa region together with the regional administration of the SBU and the detectives of the Bureau of Economic Security.
The participant in the messenger created a community where he offered his own cashless currency exchange services. Despite the prohibition of any transactions using Russian rubles and the lack of a license from the NBU, the man offered to exchange rubles for hryvnias and hryvnias for rubles.
After ordering the conversion of Ukrainian hryvnia to Russian ruble, the man received from the client the required amount on a bank card. Using currency exchanges, using the transfer of the “peer to peer” format, I converted hryvnia into electronic money in the form of Russian ruble. Further, the electronic Russian ruble replenished the balance of cards of Russian banks, at the choice of the customer of the services. The conversion of the ruble into hryvnia also took place through currency exchanges in the “peer to peer” format.
To implement the scheme, the man used bank cards issued for fake persons. For his services, he withheld from customers about 30% of the transfer amount.
According to operational data, the offender managed to carry out 5,000 currency exchange transactions totaling more than five million hryvnias.
Law enforcement officers conducted searches at the place of residence of the defendant, seized computer equipment, mobile phone, payment cards, SIM cards and more than 600 thousand hryvnias in cash.
The pre-trial investigation, the procedural guidance of which was carried out by the prosecutors of the Odessa Regional Prosecutor's Office, was completed, the indictment was sent to the court.
