Cyberpolice exposed members of a criminal organization in fraud under the guise of government payments
The attackers used phishing sites to obtain citizens' bank card data and subsequently appropriate money. According to preliminary estimates, the victims suffered more than a million hryvnias of damage. The defendants were detained, they were declared a suspect.
The fraud scheme was exposed by the employees of the Office of Combating Cybercrime in Lviv Oblast together with the Investigative Department of the Lviv Police.
The organizer was looking for performers who created phishing sites to order. Further, the attackers used online services for mass mailing of SMS. Citizens received notifications about the possibility of receiving social benefits, in particular eSupport, assistance from the EU, various programs of charitable foundations. To do this, they were asked to follow the link and indicate the data of the bank cards on which the benefit will allegedly be credited.
The information that users entered on phishing sites automatically became known to attackers. In the future, the participants of the scheme appropriated money from the accounts of the victims.
According to preliminary data, in this way they searched more than a hundred citizens. The total amount of losses is one million hryvnias.
Police officers conducted searches in the homes of the defendants. Mobile phones, SIM cards and laptops used in illegal activities have been seized.
The offenders were detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
Participants of the scheme were notified of suspicion under Art. 255 (Creation, leadership of a criminal community or criminal organization, as well as participation in it), part 4 of Art. 190 (Fraud), Part 5 of Art. 361 (Unauthorized interference in the work of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
