With the support of representatives of the NGO “All-Ukrainian Organization of Persons with Hearing Disabilities “Ukrainian Society of the Deaf”, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine took part in the action for the International Day of Sign Languages and recorded a video appeal.

In 2017, Resolution A/RES/72/161 of the United Nations decided to mark September 23 as International Sign Language Day. The celebration of this day indicates that linguistic diversity is part of the cultural identity of society. There are more than 200 national sign languages in the world that help people with hearing impairments to master information and exchange it.

Celebrating International Sign Language Day strengthens support for people with hearing impairments and helps to manifest that sign languages are part of building an equal and barrier-free society. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine supports persons with hearing impairment in every possible way, in particular, by implementing several large-scale pilot projects. Thus, according to the applications “FM Translator”, which is installed on the smartphones of people with hearing impairment, the possibility of round-the-clock emergency services calling the numbers “101” and “102” is implemented.

On the official websites of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the National Police of Ukraine, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the opportunity to submit an appeal for persons with hearing impairments is implemented.

In the territorial service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the city. Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odessa and Lviv launched an inclusive project with the participation of the Limited Liability Company “Technologies for People”, which developed the social software “ConectPro” installed on electronic tablets. The introduction of the service helps to overcome the communication barrier between employees of service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and visitors with hearing impairment.

On the tablets of the Kiev crews of the patrol police, special software is installed, which provides round-the-clock online access to sign language interpreters. This solution provided convenient and comfortable communication between police officers and people with hearing impairments.

Also, the airports of the cities of Boryspil, Zhuliany, Odessa, Lviv have installed software for round-the-clock access to the services of sign language interpreters in border control zones. Such communication significantly reduces the time of passage of all procedures, reduces queues and destroys any communication barriers.

The present dictates new rules to us and creates new social norms, one of which is the free application and use of sign languages. Let's learn, exchange information using sign languages, hear and support each other, because this is one of the steps towards building and developing a tolerant and barrier-free society.
