Ekaterina Pavlichenko: The number of abusers brought to justice for domestic violence is increasing
In 10 months of this year, the National Police received 244 thousand reports of domestic violence. The highest number of applications from women is almost 77%, about 20% from men, the rest - from children. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ekaterina Pavlichenko at the opening of the “Acting for survivors” race for the annual international action “16 Days of Activism Against Violence”, which took place today in Irpen, Kyiv region.
At the same time, she noted, the number of appeals for domestic violence is increasing, although some territories are under occupation and many Ukrainians have left abroad.
“The proportion of appeals from men is increasing. But we see that the number of offenders brought to justice by the police also increases in relation to the number of appeals. Therefore, we also talk about the fact that the police monitor and respond to these calls,” the deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs stressed.
Also, Kateryna Pavlichenko noted that the “Acting for Survivors” race to the annual international action “16 Days of Activism Against Violence” unites all stakeholders without exception — non-governmental organizations, the government sector, and international partners.
“Police officers from different units also participate in this race, among them those who directly respond to calls of domestic violence that come to line 102. These are both patrol police and specialized police groups that go exclusively to these challenges,” the Deputy Minister said.
According to her, this is really the event that shows indifference, unification.
“And I am convinced that today, when Russia commits terrible crimes against civilians and commits violence and murder, we as a society should not tolerate and hide domestic violence in families,” she concluded.
Ekaterina Pavlichenko together with her colleague - Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Leonid Timchenko also joined the race.
The event “Acting for survivors” is timed to the International Action “16 Days of Activism Against Violence”, as a solidarity show of concern for victims who have survived or are still in a state of violence. Organized by the NGO UA Experts on the initiative of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and support of United Nations in Ukraine.
According to the organizers of the first “Acting for Survivors” Race, in the future it should become an annual traditional national event for the International Action “16 Days of Activism Against Violence”, which is celebrated from November 25 to December 10 in more than 100 countries of the world since 1991 with the aim of intensifying joint efforts for a unifying goal: Bezalek counteracting all forms of violence. Ukraine joined this initiative in 2001.
Participation in the race is also about uniting all of us, about a courageous Ukrainian society that tries to become free from violence, a Ukraine that fights against any manifestations of it, including with weapons in its hands against the occupiers of the aggressor country.
Participants of the race are government officials, representatives of the deputy corps, heads of international organizations and diplomatic missions, public and cultural figures, as well as all applicants of all age categories. Distances: 200 m, 500 m, 1000 m, 6000. More than 1000 people took part in the race.
The relay race in Irpin was transferred to other cities of Ukraine and representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA (Chicago), in particular the relay of the capital region was taken by Nizhyn, Vinnytsia, Khoroshiv, Kalush, Korosten, Mukachevo, Lubny, Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro, Lutsk, Ternopil, Uzhgorod, Lviv and Kamianets-Podilskyi.
During the event, each participant could make a donut for participating. All funds raised will go towards charitable assistance for civilians affected by violence.
