Igor Klymenko took part in honoring Ukrainians who eliminated the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster
“38 years ago there was a disaster in Chernobyl. Radiation accident, the consequences of which went far beyond the borders of Ukraine and even the whole of our Europe. The world has experienced that disaster. But still it was localized. People stood up for life and fulfilled their duty,” the Head of State said.
The memory of the heroes — liquidators of the disaster at the Chernobyl station was honored with a minute of silence.
Volodymyr Zelensky thanked everyone who defended their lives 38 years ago and awarded the orders “For Merit” of the III degree and “For Courage” of the III degree to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the liquidators of the consequences of the accident.
The President paid tribute to all people in Slavutych for rescuing then and helping Ukraine in the spring of 2022, during a full-scale Russian invasion.
“Slavutich did not submit to the invaders. He showed his character. Struggled. Defended. And we saw you in this square. We saw the heroism of those of our people who, in the conditions of the Russian occupation, worked shifts at the station. People saved Ukraine in the 22nd year, and only to the people, to all our people, Putin loses. Any evil will not stand against a brave people who do everything to protect life,” he said.
Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke with residents of Slavutych, in particular with relatives of captured National Guardsmen, who appealed to the Head of State with a request to return the defenders of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant home.
“We will definitely return everything. Not only our territory, but above all our people, all our prisoners: both military and civilian, and our soldiers of the Armed Forces and our National Guards. We all remember. We will definitely do it,” the President assured.
