Igor Klymenko: About 25% of Ukraine's territory is contaminated with mines and explosive objects
As a result of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, as of now about 25% of the territory of Ukraine is contaminated with mines and explosive objects. This was stated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klymenko in an interview with the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
“The most densely mined de-occupied regions. Actually, stabilization measures there begin with demining,” the Minister noted.
According to him, settlements are primarily cleaned.
“In order to return the authorities there as soon as possible, to restore the work of enterprises, the activities of critical infrastructure facilities, etc. Agricultural land is also a priority,” the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs stressed.
He noted that the longer the occupation of the settlement lasts, the more massive the mining.
Answering the question of the journalist of the agency about the priority of demining, Igor Klymenko said that this is a difficult issue, especially in the frontline regions.
“So we will clear a settlement, determine it safe, and then fire again. And that's it, we start over. So there are a lot of conventions now. Especially since we still find shells from the Second World War in the ground,” he explained.
