Igor Klymenko: 5000 policemen serve in the brigade “Fury”, which is directly at the front
This was stated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klymenko in an exclusive interview to the National Telemarathon “United News”.
“The law clearly states that police officers serving in the ranks of the National Police are booked. At the same time, in accordance with the law, which was adopted in 2023, combatant units can be formed in the police. That is, these are persons who are directly on the front line and have the same rights and duties as the servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, other military formations — such as the National Guard or the State Border Service,” the Minister noted.
Igor Klymenko noted that 5,000 policemen are serving in the brigade of the “Fury” Offensive Guard, which was formed at the beginning of last year, which is directly at the front as part of the Ukrainian Defense Forces and which has its dead and wounded fighters.
“Another 30,000 police officers perform police functions in the regions where the fighting is taking place directly. In particular, the White Angel detachments, which are engaged in the evacuation of civilians - children, elderly citizens from the combat zone,” he stressed.
He recalled that today 75,000 men and 25,000 women serve in the ranks of the National Police.
“These are very important figures, because we must understand that the police also serve, they also fight, no one hides,” the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs stressed.
The Minister also added that there is a lot of work in the police units, which is currently not advertised publicly. In particular, which deal with drones and other specific functions. For example, about 20,000 border guards are currently fighting at the front and police are involved in joint outfits with border guards at the state border.
“And if you subtract from 75,000 male police officers the number of units that are directly or will soon be at war, then 30-35 thousand male police officers remain in the controlled territory, who are responsible for the protection of public order, for the detection of crimes in general for the entire police function,” - emphasized by Igor Klymenko.
That is, according to the Minister, to say that the police have reservations and do not fight is, to put it mildly, incorrect.
“This is incorrect, and I want to repeat my thesis. I have repeated it more than once. If the situation on the front will become even more complicated, then all of us, including policemen, should take up arms,” said Igor Klymenko.
At the same time, he stressed that in addition to the external front of the fight against the enemy, there is also an internal front - the fight against crime.
“For example, 25 murders in a week are in a peaceful territory, and we have to analyze what kind of murder, who killed whom, with what weapon, where is this weapon, whether it is a trophy weapon, whether it is a homemade weapon, whether it is a cold weapon,” the Minister explained.
