The film “20 Days in Mariupol” with a policeman in the lead role won the Oscar 2024

For the first time in the history of cinema, Ukrainian documentary won the Oscar 2024 film award in the category “Best Feature Documentary”.

The film “20 Days in Mariupol” was filmed by Ukrainian war correspondent and writer Mstislav Chernov in February-March 2022. On the first day of a full-scale war, Mstislav and his colleagues were in Mariupol. They filmed everything that was going on around. Mstislav Chernov's team were the only civilian journalists left in Mariupol after the Russian invasion in 2022.

One of the main characters of the film is policeman Vladimir Nikulin. He helped cover the destruction of houses, the bombing of the maternity ward, the murder of children and the survival of basements in besieged Mariupol.

Vladimir Nikulin has been serving for more than 30 years. In 2014, he left the temporarily occupied Donetsk, later served in the surrounded Mariupol. In August 2023, he was wounded.Then the law enforcement officer provided assistance to the victims of the Russian shelling of Pokrovsk.
