Bohdan Drapyaty: Verkhovna Rada supported an increase in the number of border guards by 15,000 from the day of termination or abolition of martial law
On his official Facebook page, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Bogdan Drapyaty said that today the Verkhovna Rada adopted as a whole the Government Draft Law “On Amendments to Paragraph 1 of Section IX “Final Provisions” of the Law of Ukraine “On the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine”, register r. № 11091.
Therefore, it is envisaged to increase the total number of the State Border Guard Service by 15,000 persons within a year from the date of termination or abolition of martial law on the territory of Ukraine. Thus, the total number will be up to 75,000, including up to 67,000 military personnel.
As the Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine informed, such a legislative initiative is due to the need to ensure the readiness of the State Border Guard Service in the post-war period to take control of the state border within its internationally recognized limits and will make it possible:
- formation of border detachments according to the new organizational and staff structure (brigade type);
- increasing the density of protection of the state border with Russia and Belarus, maintaining combat reserves in a state of constant readiness for prompt response to changes in the security situation;
- implementation of a new model of state border protection in the restored sections of the state border and during the liberation of territories that were temporarily occupied;
- increase of engineering and technical arrangement of the border and restoration of border infrastructure.
“The adopted Law will allow the State Border Guard Service to adequately respond to actual and potential threats to national security at the state border, especially considering that as a result of the implementation of Ukraine's European integration aspirations, the border with the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus in the future will become the external border of the European Union”, — wrote Bohdan Drapyaty.
