“The security of Ukraine is the security of the European Union”: Igor Klymenko met with the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ilva Johansson
The working meeting of the Head of the Department and Commissioner of the European Union Ilva Johansson took place today, May 11, at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
Igor Klymenko noted that this meeting is a continuation of the ongoing dialogue of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the European Commission and concerns the formation of a single security space of Ukraine and the European Union.
“Only in the short year we have made very fast progress in implementing our joint programs, which allow Ukraine, first of all, to integrate into the European space. Moreover, thanks to this cooperation, we receive from the European Union today all the necessary assistance - not only material and technical, but also professional and professional in the formation of a security environment in our country - both during a large-scale war and planning our joint actions after the end of hostilities,” the Minister said.
According to him, we are talking about Ukraine's participation in the European migration network, in the anti-crime network, the European network of explosives units. He also noted that our state has joined the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, which involves Ukraine in the pan-European family, in particular providing assistance in crisis situations. In addition, the National Police of Ukraine has joined the international network for combating OZH and criminal structures.
During the meeting, a number of issues of interest to Ukraine and the European Union were discussed. This is the issue of migration, in particular, the issue of migration control, the issue of arranging the borders of our country with the countries of the European Union, as well as the further assistance of the EU in the arrangement of borders throughout the territory of our state. In addition, the issue of investigation and documentation of war crimes of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine was considered.
“To date, the National Police has documented more than 75,000 crimes committed by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine,” he said.
Igor Klymenko informed that the Ministry of Internal Affairs plans to launch the state register of weapons as early as June 23 of this year. He added that all weapons that were issued in the first days of a full-scale war were registered and accounted for by the National Police.
Also, the head of the department said that the bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs system are working on the demining of our territory, because 30% of Ukraine is mined. A “Humanitarian Demining Center” has been established, which optimizes all humanitarian demining activities: planning, execution and financing. At the same time, the Minister paid attention to the basic needs of the units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs during the war and the formation of the “Guard of Offensive”.
“I am proud of every employee. Thank you for highly appreciating our work. We are already planning a peaceful life together with the countries of the European Union,” said the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In her turn, the European Commissioner noted: “People on the front line defend Ukraine, defend European ideas and values. And we, the European Union, unquestionably continue to give you our support.”
Ilva Johansson stressed that the security of Ukraine is the security of the European Union.
“We have identified 7 steps that Ukraine must take before moving on to the EU accession negotiations, and I must admit that I am impressed by your successes in this area, taking into account the fact that in parallel with all the processes you are fighting in this war,” she added.
“I am grateful to the EU countries and the European Commission for their help from the first days of the beginning of a full-scale war. The assistance that has been directed to the training of our specialists and then to technical assistance to our investigative and forensic units, as well as the interaction with the Office of the Attorney General and with all other law enforcement agencies will make it possible to bring the investigation of these crimes to international courts. Those guilty of crimes that were committed on the territory of our state will face a fair trial and will be punished accordingly,” Ihor Klymenko summed up.
