“AZOV”: THE GUARD OF THE OFFENSIVE. How it all began
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine has launched a special project in which it tells about each of the brigades of the “Guard of Offensive”. In this series of the special project of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, we tell about the legendary unit, which in 2022 became the center of defense of the city of Mariupol and heroically held the Azovstal plant.
One of the most famous military formations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Created on the basis of the legendary unit — the regiment “Azov”. It consists of fighters of different nationalities.
Azov liberated Mariupol in June 2014, took part in battles near Ilovaisk, defended Mariupol from the end of August 2014, carried out an offensive on Shyrokyne in February 2015. The forces of the unit conducted a successful Pavlopil-Shyrokyn operation in 2015, performed a number of successful combat missions in the area of the Svitlodar arc.
During the Russian invasion of 2022, Azov became the focus of the heroic defense of the city of Mariupol, which lasted 86 days, 82 of which were completely surrounded.
