Alyona Matveeva: Compliance with the rules for handling heating devices will help save your life
The spokeswoman of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Alyona Matveeva told how to protect yourself during the use of generators, tourist torches and candles, as well as how to keep warm in the event of a prolonged lack of electricity.
“Previously, during the month of 2006 there were fires, 9 people died, including one child. Also during the month 83 people were injured, including seven children. The main reasons for which the fires occurred: violation of the rules of operation of the power grid, as well as electrical installations - 709 fires, careless handling of electrical appliances - 509, as well as furnace heating - 284 fires,” said Alyona Matveeva.
The spokeswoman of the Ministry of Internal Affairs stressed that there are rules for the use of gas equipment that will help protect against fires:
“Speaking of gas tourist burners, first of all it is necessary to use only certified equipment, and at the beginning of operation it is necessary to carefully check the integrity of the gas cylinder. If you use such a burner indoors, there must be ventilation. It should be kept in a dark and cool room, in the light it can explode. Also be sure to stock up on a fire extinguisher. About candles: we advise you not to burn the candles to the end, leave 2-3 centimeters of smoke to avoid fire. Do not leave a candle near those objects that can catch fire, do not go to bed if the candle is burning. The candle itself should be kept in a metal candlestick,” said Alyona Matveeva.
She also stressed that generators can not be used indoors, they must be outside, at least 6 meters from windows, garages, etc.
“If the generator fails, it can be electrocuted, and not only the generator itself, but also the devices that are connected to it. Fuel for the generator, which is spilled, ignites instantly,” the spokeswoman of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine said.
Alyona Matveeva also told how to prepare for a power outage for two days or more:
“It is necessary to additionally insulate the front door, place the whole family in one room and additionally insulate the door to this room. Be sure to find out the addresses of heating points, as well as stores that work from the generator. Stock up on food and water for 7 days. Do not allow hypothermia, do not consume tobacco and alcohol, wear multi-layered clothing, cover with blankets. Try to add more warmth without resorting to the use of appliances,” said Alyona Matveeva.
