Administrators of service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Odessa region master sign language
Barrierlessness is becoming a new norm in Ukrainian society. This war has shown us how barrier-free is not a formality. It's a matter of survival.
The goal of the state is to change approaches to the perception of the theme of inclusiveness, in order to create in Ukraine a barrier-free space for all citizens to create conditions in everyday life, where all citizens will be comfortable, where everyone can freely participate actively in the life of the country. In April 2021, on the initiative of First Lady Elena Zelenska, the National Strategy for the Implementation of Barriers was approved, which is already at the stage of practical implementation.
The main thing is to understand that barrier-free is not just building a ramp near a government institution or cinema, barrier-free is a quality of life. And the quality of life is the accessibility of everyone to all its spheres, including in the receipt of public services, so the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Odessa region actively support the state strategy of barrier-free.
Administrators of service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Odessa region have started training on overcoming the barrier in communication of people with hearing impairments. Mastering the course on learning Ukrainian Sign Language began with the alphabet or dactyl and learned that each letter has its own combination of fingers, the dactyl is used for names, geographical names and some words.
In the classes, administrators learned to show the words of congratulations and compose sentences that are most often used when communicating with our clients: “Good afternoon! How to help you? Thank you for the feedback. We are glad to see you again in our centers!”
“Citizens must have equal access to a decent life, especially at a time when our society has experienced the barriers of war. Such training helps us better understand society and its needs.
Knowledge of sign language is not only communication, it is also respect and a desire to help people with hearing and speech impairment,” the employees of the service center of the GSC of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Odessa region emphasize.
The new knowledge will contribute to the expansion of the communication skills of our administrators, because on a daily basis they communicate with different people.
“Take a step towards overcoming barriers in communicating with people with hearing impairment. We take care of everyone! We are building a real European state — Ukraine,” they call in the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
