The Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov announced this on February 10th. MIA received information that Gela Kardava is a regular agent of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. MIA is also checking now information about his cooperation with the Russian secret services.
42-year-old Gela Kardava - a native of Georgia, who has spent many years in prison for committing serious crimes (robbery and burglary) in the territory of other states.
"Gela Kardava was "crowned" as a criminal lord in Moscow in 1996, when he was only 21 years old, which attested to his high professional "qualifications". From open sources we know that Gela Kardava is one of the organizers of the so-called "commercial coronations" of criminal kingpins ("thieves in law)" in the post-Soviet countries", - noted Arsen Avakov.
When Ukrainian law enforcement officers have received intelligence information that well known in criminal circles "thief in law" Gela Kardava was now in Kiev, they undertook a set of search and investigation activities which resulted in detainment of Gela Kardava and his cronies after their meeting in one of the restaurants in the capital.
During interrogation, he refused to recount his criminal biography, noting that in recent years he lived in Cyprus, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine.
Police officers are now checking information on his involvement in several crimes in the capital, as well as his links with the local criminal gangs.
