Arsen Avakov: «The first phase of the MIA reform will be completed on May 31 in Mariupol» (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

19.05.2016 16:01

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov announced it on May 19 while launching the new patrol police in Krivoy Rog.

"We are completing the first stage of the reform on May 31 in Mariupol. As of June 1st we shall have the patrol police in all major cities of Ukraine. More than 11,000 new police officers serve now around the country. There are still some important steps in front of us: large-scale reform of the MIA service centers, establishing the system of local (neighborhood) police inspectors and reform of the criminal detective and investigative units, district police offices, police lock-ups (temporary containment cells). It's a long way, but we all have to walk it together" - said Arsen Avakov.

Then, according to the minister, will start the work on improving the police performance and the police units roundout. Currently there is a lack of police staff and to provide for necessary level and quality of public order we need to increase the number of policemen on the streets of Ukrainian cities.

"These are principal and basic things. A policeman must be respected. Throughout the country policemen often get such respect in advance. For me, it means that our society feels a need for honest police. On this basis we are building a new institution"- said the head of MIA.

He emphasized that the police reform is a very complex process. Creation of the patrol police is only the first small step forward in order to make society feel trust to these people in uniform.

The Head of the National Police Khatia Dekanoidze added that the patrol police will help the police criminal units to fight street crime. The agency also plans to pay considerable attention to improvement of the legal framework that regulates activity of the National Police.

"The main thing I want to say is that we have a clear understanding of the course of the National Police reform. I want to thank everyone who believes in the future of Ukraine, in the future of the National Police"- said Khatia Dekanoidze.
