The European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos stated it on May 12, 2016, during his meeting with the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister for European Integration Tihran Avakian, the Head of the National Police Khatia Dekanoidze, the Head of the State Emergency Service Nikolay Chechetkin, the Head of the State Migration Service Maxim Sokolyuk, as well as the Head of the MIA special advisory group Eka Zguladze.
"You have to feel happy to be a part of this generation, which realizes all social and political changes in your country. In this process you are not alone. The efforts you are making are extremely important. You have achieved great results, and I think that the days are not far away when Ukrainians will be able to travel freely in Europe. I understand that citizens of Ukraine are waiting for this moment"- said Dimitris Avramopoulos.
He noted that Ukraine today was not simply one more country, which aspired to join Europe, but was also the guarantor of stability in the region.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov stressed that fulfillment of conditions for liberalization of visa regime in many aspects was linked with the ongoing reform of the MIA.
"We started this reform two years ago by approving the strategy, which was agreed with the EUAM-Ukraine. And we are realizing it. EU is one of our main partners in reforming Ukrainian police" - added the Minister.
European Commissioner also stressed that it was very important to join the efforts of the EU and Ukraine law enforcement bodies in order to achieve common goals.
"I shall ask the director of Europol to visit Ukraine in order to join our efforts. We shall also assign the special communications officer to make communication between Europol and Ukraine more efficient. Thus we shall be able both to fight jointly against organized crime and terrorism and to share information in the climate of the mutual trust - said Dimitris Avramopoulos - let us move in this direction. Let us remind that recently the leaders of the National Police of Ukraine and Interpol discussed further cooperation. Following these discussions the Ukrainian side intends to initiate a special meeting on combating activities of "thieves in law" and criminal bosses. Meanwhile, representatives of Ukraine have for the first time joined the Interpol unit on combating organized crime.
